Mid-to-late July is the sweet spot
Retailers start their back-to-school sales in mid-July, and that is when the core consumables — pencils, crayons, glue, notebooks, folders — hit their lowest prices. Stock is full and the deals are real. Shopping this window beats both the June "too early" gap and the late-August rush.
Buy consumables in bulk
Pencils, glue sticks, and tissues get used up and re-requested all year. When they are cheap in July, buy extra. You will need them again by winter, and the mid-year price will not be as good.
Wait on the big-ticket items
Backpacks, calculators, and electronics follow a different pattern. Backpacks often dip again right as school starts, and graphing calculators are frequently cheapest used or during later promotions. If you can wait a couple of weeks on these, you often save more.
